🧭 How to Test a YouTube Thumbnail

  1. Drop in your thumbnail (16:9, at least 1280x720) and type your title. Add up to 6 versions to compare.
  2. Switch between Home feed, Search, Suggested and Mobile to see how it reads at each size. Most views come from small thumbnails, so check the Suggested and Mobile views closely.
  3. Toggle Light mode; dark thumbnails can disappear on a dark feed and vice versa.
  4. With more than one version, switch between them above the preview to see which stands out most in the same feed.
  5. Pick a trending category to compare against, or paste links to the exact videos you are competing with.

Is it free? Do I need an account?
Yes, it's completely free, with no sign-up, no account and no usage limits. Your images stay on your device; NerdZap's server only looks up the real YouTube videos shown alongside them.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
Use 16:9, at least 640 pixels wide, under 50 MB, as a JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP. 1280x720 is the minimum to aim for; YouTube now accepts thumbnails up to 4K (3840x2160).
How long can a YouTube title be?
Up to 100 characters, but long titles are cut off in many layouts. Put the most important words in roughly the first 60 to 70 characters, and use the previews above to see exactly where yours gets cut.
Is my thumbnail uploaded anywhere?
No. Your images stay in your browser. Only the example videos and any YouTube links you paste are looked up, through NerdZap's server using YouTube's official API.
Why does the duration badge matter?
The video length sits on the bottom-right of every thumbnail, so text or faces placed there get covered. The previews show it in place so you can check.
